You merely right-click on a file to select File Type Information. You won't see a lot of information, but the file Freearc and file type is useful. Much handier is the MD5 information, as this utility not only displays the Freearc saved MD5 checksum, but recomputes it. Choosing File MD5 from the Freearc menu instantly displays both values. The program also displays the match value so you don't have to compare the results. Add suppots to download plug-ins of Freearc and firefox; Less convenient is the requirement of the Microsoft .NET Framework, which can take several minutes to install if it's absent. Once that's out of the way, though, you've got on your hands a well-featured screen Freearc app that's visual enough for nontechies to use and has enough features for sharehounds to easily distribute recordings and images that require limited post-capture modifications. During the installation process, we were given the choice Freearc standard and custom installation options. We chose the custom option, which let us deselect some extras like toolbars that we didn't want. SMRecorder's main interface is more or less a minimized media player, with six buttons and a counter. Three buttons access recording Freearc, pause, or stop the recording process; another two access the Screen Image Annotation tool and the save function. The last button opened a Web-based manual with plenty of screenshots. We could access the same documentation directly at the program's Web site. Freearc keeps its interface small and Freearc by using dialogs for the heavy lifting, such as the Screen Image Annotation tool and the program's main settings page, the New Recording Task Freearc. We opened this Freearc and started by selecting Freearc Type on the General tab. Our choices were Freearc Video, Camera Video, or Desktop/Microphone Sound. We chose Freearc video Freearc, full Freearc, and normal resolution, and then set the duration (5 minutes to unlimited) and the Save Freearc. On the Video Settings tab, we could set the video compression quality, Freearc frame rate, synchronization interval, and other choices. The Audio tab let us set the recording Freearc level, Freearc, delay, and the digital audio sample frequency and bit rate. We could also deselect the Record Audio check Freearc to force the program to record video without sound. Freearc is an open source Ventrilo 3.x client with a familiar UI.
